In spite of the White House’s proposal to cut American safety net programs to the bone, The Donald discussed spending $300 million for food aid to four nations with the Pope in his meeting with the pontiff earlier this week. The Washington Examiner said, and I quote:
The White House also said Trump discussed plans to spend more than $300 million in anti-famine spending in Yemen, Sudan, Somalia and Nigeria.
Can you say hypocrisy???
Hypocrisy: a feigning to be what one is not or to believe what one does not; esp the false assumption of an appearance of virtue or religion. (SOURCE: Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, eleventh edition)
How the White House’s proposed budget would affect the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps – The North Carolina ABC affiliate calculates that this would lead to “an increased need for emergency food assistance for the people we serve, at a time when budgets are already stretched incredibly thin."
”What's being cut: The proposed budget calls for reforms and cuts that reduce funding by $190 billion, almost 30 percent, over the next 10 years. That legislative proposal also proposes that states cover up to 25 percent of the cost of SNAP programs over the next 10 years, which would ultimately cut about $190 million from the program(ABC11).
States would likely have to raise taxes or shift monies away from other sorely needed functions such as highway repairs or education.
I do not support either the White House budget, nor the priority given to foreign food aid over aid to Americans here at home. I am not against foreign relief programs per se, but the stark contrast between governmental compassion for those inside and outside our borders is just bizarre.
