I am pleased to introduce you to Buck, the parade pony. He is actually a pedigreed quarter horse, but has consented to take things easier as an equine parade official. He helps his outrider, seen here in a red parade suit, keep an eye on the proceedings.
The outrider has to jump in if anything goes wrong, like a harness breaking or a team taking off in the wrong direction. Outriders also keep the onlookers from getting too close to the teams of horses and spooking them or getting hurt.
Buck was famous for chasing down a runaway wagon and catching the team that was pulling it. That was one day that his rider was glad that he was a real quarter horse.
The picture was taken on the day of one of the Great American Circus Parades in downtown Milwaukee, WI. (The Circus Parades were an annual event until the Baraboo Circus Museum decided that the cost of putting on the parade about equaled what they made from it.) Buck does not look very dignified in this picture. But I think that he wanted to make me laugh, and so he made his best horse-laugh face.
