Right up there with the disastrous Shackleton expedition is this account of the Mawson party to the Antarctic. One sled and member fell into a crevasse -- the sled that carried all their food and supplies and tent. That anyone could survive this disaster is beyond imagining.

The stuff those early explorers (foolhardy) tried, and with inadequate equipment, is amazing. Remember when they finally located that lost mountain climber who'd disappeared in the '20s? He wore less than someone out for a wintry walk in the park.

Yeah, sure those old-timers were tough old birds. But that was ridiculous the way some were not only ill-prepared but the way they seemed to actually court disaster.
