15 most stressful, lowest-paying jobs in the U.S.

advertisement

Who would have thought that Social Workers (No. 1) would have more stressful jobs than Film/Television Producers (No. 14)??? Commercial Photog is No. 8, Minister is No. 10, high school teachers are No. 15 on this list.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This survey had a lot of surprises. What was most surprising to you about this ranking? Would you agree or disagree with where they placed certain jobs?

The average total compensation for a minister is about $56,000 the same for teachers. The average American makes about $20,000 less. I have suspicions about this list.

It is NOT about the compensation one receives for a job; that is just a part of the rankings. The stress involved, the lack of control over one's job situation, the lack of approval/support from society, all contribute. A teacher, say, has to face lots of negative situations with kids out of control, yet gets little support from parents or administrators. And they have no control over the larger societal influences that create those problems in the classroom.

Ministers have little of the general support and approval from society that they enjoyed decades ago. Our society has become more and more secular, with greater numbers of people who deny that there is any higher power of any kind. On the other hand, they are expected to be perfect paragons of virtue in their community. That is a hard double-whammy to handle anywhere.

Your headline says "lowest paid". I can agree that the jobs are stressful. They are NOT the lowest paid by any stretch of the imagination. Part of what they are being paid for IS the stress of the job.

I'll grant you that, Dr. K.
But anyway it is not MY headline, and I would not have phrased it the way they did. However, schoolteachers' pay can vary widely depending on what is needed to get by in that area. Teachers are paid a lot more in New York, say, but living expenses are much higher -- but it skews the averages for the rest of the country. Badly. And frankly whether you are single, or married and trying to raise a family, $50K is just getting by. Fifty thou nowadays is what you need to make to just have an average std of living in America. Working people who make far less are just a paycheck away from the street.
