I a real-life episode from the classic Hitchcock film, The Birds, masses of starlings have bombed local cars with droppings in this quiet Illinois neighborhood. At sunset, hundreds of birds alight on the power lines and ignore firecrackers shot off by residents to scare them away.
Well --- they could be massing in preparation for migration. Could that be a plausible explanation??
I found some info on a website called sialis.org. They had this to say about starlings massing:
A migrating flock can number 100,000 birds. They roost communally in flocks that may contain as many as a million birds. Watch this amazing video of a swarming flock of starlings that appear to be feeding.
Ahem. That is definitely Hictchcockian.
Oh the video is at Google -- http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6815781973393100875#
