Backyard chicken coops crop up in backyards in Chicago, suburbs

Yes, you can raise chickens in da big city, just pay attention to the local regulations. Some specify that you can raise the chickens, but ban having roosters, or slaughtering them. In Chicagoland, having a backyard coop is catching on in a big way, and a vendor out east who sells chicks is enjoying extraordinary sales growth. Who-da thunk that this would be a growth sector of the economy -- recession-proof, no less?

The ban on roosters is easy to explain. They don't just crow at dawn -- they can crow the whole gol- durn day! That gets on your nerves in a hurry!

But the taste of fresh eggs is supposed to be out of this world. I am in an apartment so I cannot experiment with raising the chickens but if I had a house or at least a condo, I sure would love to try.

BTW I do have this nagging question: What do you do in winter when the snows come and the wind chill drops to single digits? Do you have to bring the birds into the house or something? Or have them slaughtered?
