The fine and honorable tradition of graduation from being a mere pollywog (wog for short) to a shellback commemmorates a sailor's crossing the line -- crossing the Tropics of Cancer or Capricorn while on one's long voyage around the world to and from one's ports of call or while on maneuvers.
