The Story of Ka La Ho'iho'i Ea For generations, Hawaiians have celebrated & honored the date of July 31, the day in 1843 when Hawaii's sovereignty was returned to the Hawaiian Kingdom after five months of illegal British occupation by a Lord George Paulet, a rogue British naval commander. Paulet was seeking to coerce special land and rights for British subjects. Under duress & protest King Kamehameha III was forced to cede his kingdom to Paulet, but then the king appealed to Queen Victoria for justice. In response, Queen Victoria send British fleet commander Adm. Richard Thomas to enforce the British law which stated that 'native government be treated with forbearance and courtesy, and their laws and customs be respected.'

Admiral Thomas restored native rule in Hawaii on July 31, 1843 by raising the Hawaiian flag at Kulaokahua, known today as Thomas Square- the first public park on Oahu. On that same day, King Kamehameha III proclaimed, "Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka Aina I Ka Pono." The precise translation of this now State-motto is "The sovereignty of the land continues because of our righteousness."

On November 28 of that same year, 1843, France and England jointly recognized the Hawaiian Islands as an independent, sovereign country, at that time the United States also recognized the independence of the Hawaiian kingdom. This became Hawaiian Independence Day. The Hawaiian people continue to press for the United States to end the occupation of Hawaii and restore Hawaiian independence.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The Hawaiians want their monarchy and self-rule back. Never mind that it has been a century since the queen was overthrown; they have this memory that they restored the monarchy once and they can do it again.

I fully support the indigenous Hawaiian's efforts to restore their independence. Good for them.

Saddam invades Kuwait and it's bad, "Let's go to war!"
US invades Hawaii and it's "I know, but we really need it"

What a bunch of hypocrites!

The US violated several treaties with Hawaii, international law, and even your own constitution, and you continue to do so to this day! In 1897, 98% of Hawaii's population signed an Anti-Annexation Petition but the US still annexed Hawaii against the people's wishes.

Governments get their power and consent to govern from the governed. The Kingdom of Hawaii citizens NEVER asked to be governed by the US. All we wanted was for you to understand, "As you love your country, so do we love ours."

No, we don't need your tourism. You are NOT the only country on Earth whose citizens come to visit.

Yes, you need/want your military bases here. King Kalakaua granted the US exclusive use of Pearl Harbor. But you felt you needed the whole country to fight the Spanish-American War, even though you stationed troops in Hawaii AFTER the war ended.

No, we won't pay for "upgrades" on Hawaiian soil. That's like a thief who stole your car, installed a dvd player, amp and speakers, charging you for the "upgrades" on YOUR stolen car.

Yes, we want freedom and independence and a chance to determine our own future, not what the rich white man wants us to do.

Yes, we want your country to take responsibilty for past actions and right the wrongs done. Isn't the US supposedly the defenders of freedom around the world, stand for truth and justice, etc, etc?

No, you can't use the excuse "If the US didn't take over Hawaii, someone else would have." That's like being in court and saying to the judge "If I didn't rape that girl, someone else would have."

I wonder, how it would look on CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, etc if the United States were to fight an insurgency on one of it's own states. Probably pretty awkward and oppressive. Certainly would'nt do any good given the current global image of the US.

Really. It's time to grow some balls, swallow your pride and undo the wrongs done against the Hawaiian Kingdom. Put it this way, you will have freed a Nation without firing a shot. You will have also gained a friend amongst Nations who also love Peace and Freedom, instead of another potential enemy.

(I deleted the duplicate comment, nothing personal.)
Hello, and thanks for stopping in and giving us a message direct from the Islands.
There are a few people on the Newsvine community who support the native Hawiians in their efforts to regain sovereignty.
But can you tell me a bit about the different groups? It looks like there is more than one person being put forth as the rightful king of Hawaii -- can you tell us anything more about that?

Read my article "Is Obama a natural born citizen" in light of this Hawaii Nation movement. I am a member of Hawaii Nation and live in NY. I have been to that very beautiful place. If it's true that Hawaii was taken over against their will, and it is,why shouldn't it be given back. [See Public Law 103-150 commonly known as "the apology". Signed by William Clinton in 1993, (100 years after the incursion by the US to takeover the sovereign nation of Hawaii).]You  have friends on newsvine Hawaii Nation. Mahalo, aloha.

Mahalo, and aloha to you Robert. Forgot all about that formal apology by Clinton, tho I cam sure I read a bit about it at the time. Well, it is a real mess, and the US govt has never shown any inclination to surrender any territory, whether Hawaii, or any bases, etc like Guantanamo, Samoa, Philippines, Midway. They could at least make a land transfer back to the native Hawaiians, somewhat similar to the granting of sovereignty to native Americans on reservation lands. That is the least they could do.

They should give the entire land mass of the Sovereign Nation of Hawaii back. I agree that it was wronfully annexed. History documents it.The US no longer has any connection to the Phillipines. Our bases have been closed for a while,in my understanding. The "apology" is US Public Law 103-150. Have you read my article MinnieApolis?
