Looking for an excuse to cut back on eating out? A recent analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that Minnesota had the third-most restaurant-related food poisoning outbreaks in 2006, the latest year for which statistics are available. Minnesota's 55 outbreaks put it in league with the big boys. Rounding out the top five: Florida, California, Ohio, and New York.
Sources of hi food contamination were salads, fish and deli sandwiches. Seafood is notorious for the Norwalk virus -- but salads? Salad bar items sit out for hours, and you never know if it was cut in a work surface that was previously occupied by meats or things like that. The cutline under the Minnesota map says: 'It might be worth the drive to eat in Wisconsin.' While Wisconsin is doing better in restaurant safety, one can never take food safety for granted. All your efforts to eat healthy by sticking to lighter fare like salads and fish will boomerang on you if you have not relied on yourself to keep that food properly chilled and washed, thawed and cooked.
